Gift something that outlasts the festival

A founder’s guide to choosing diamond jewellery for Karwa Chauth, Dhanteras and Diwali, without the last-minute stress.

Help me choose a gift

Festive weeks are the busiest time for any jeweller, and also the time when people make rushed decisions. A gift bought in a hurry often ends up in a drawer. A gift chosen with a little thought gets worn for years. So here is how I help people choose: by who it is for, what the moment means, and how it will be worn.

The festive dates are close, so start with the clock.

Dates as listed on samvat.in. Festival dates can vary by region and panchang, so confirm locally.

What each occasion calls for

Each festival has its own mood, so the right gift changes with it.

Choose an occasion

A good gift says “I thought about you,” not “I was in a hurry.”

Find the right gift

Five gifting mistakes to avoid

I see the same ones every festive season. Tap to read each.

1. Guessing the ring size

A ring that does not fit is the most common reason a gift comes back. Quietly measure a ring she already wears on the same finger, or ask a friend or family member. We can also resize many rings after purchase, so ask about it before you buy.

2. Choosing a piece she will not wear

Think about her daily life, not only the occasion. Studs and pendants get worn most often. Heavier statement pieces suit special days. Match the piece to how she dresses and lives.

3. Starting too late

The days around Dhanteras are crowded, and anything that needs resizing or customising takes time. Ask for current lead times, and start early so you are not choosing under pressure.

4. Skipping the paperwork

A gift should come with a proper invoice, a hallmark on the gold, and a certificate for a larger centre diamond. These protect her too, if she ever wants to exchange or insure it. About BIS hallmarking ↗

5. Not asking about exchange

Tastes change and sizes change. Ask what the exchange policy is before you pay. It makes a gift easier to give.
